West Indies beat India to reach final

Lendl Simmons hit an unbeaten 83 to guide West Indies to a seven-wicket victory against hosts India in the second semi-final of the World Twenty20 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

West Indies chased down India’s score of 192-2 with two balls to spare to set up a final with England at Eden Gardens on Sunday.

The hosts were big favourites to win, and their odds improved when the West Indies’ star man Chris Gayle departed early for just five runs.

But the Windies chased down the total thanks to some mega hitting from Lendl Simmons. He smashed 83 from 51 balls to help seal victory with three balls to spare.

India racked up 192 thanks to big scores from Rohit Sharma (43), Ajinkya Rahane (40) and top scorer Virat Kohli (89).

But despite posting a decent score, the underdogs were not overrawed.

Opener Johnson Charles blasted 52 before Simmons and Andre Russell (43) did the business at the death.

England await the Windies in Sunday’s final after their thumping win over New Zealand yesterday.
