The lawyers of six among eight Indians arrested in connection with the alleged kidney racket have accepted that they had donated their kidneys, Ada Derana reporter said.
This was said when the case was taken up for hearing at the Colombo Magistrate’s Court this morning (04).
Eight Indian nationals were arrested on March 4 for allegedly abusing visa conditions and having links to the ongoing racket involving kidney transplant operations in Sri Lanka.
They were reportedly arrested by officers of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) around midnight at a guesthouse on Pennyquick Road in Wellawatta.
Six of the eight Indians arrested were found to have had their kidneys removed in an alleged organ transplant racket in Sri Lanka, the Colombo Crimes Division told the magistrates court Health Ministry had initiated an investigation on the conduct of the local doctors following complaints by Indian police.
In January, it was reported that the Indian police had charged six Sri Lankan doctors for carrying out 60 kidney transplants.
