During the recent past many elephants had been killed in collisions with trains and five recommendations have been made by the appointed observatory Committee to prevent such tragedies, including construction of overhead passages for elephants to cross mountainous areas.
This committee was appointed on the recommendations of the Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and includes officers of the Railway Department and the Wildlife Department.
This committee had engaged in an observation of the area from Mahawa junction to Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Thalaimannar and Kankasanturai railway lines and had obtained data of elephant behavior on the North-East routes.
Accordingly, in addition to the above recommendation, the team has also proposed top clear an area of 30 meters on either side of the rail tracks to enable train drivers to see clearly, enforcement of stipulated speed limits, remove obstacles in the path of elephants and construct clear pathways, construct electrified fences and lay rail track obstacles and install warning systems.
