Long hair, don’t care.

Alright, let’s have a bit of a Q &A session shall we ladies? Get to know your hair better!

Question 01:  “It’s literally on top of your head, but is it your top priority?”

Take a few minutes to reflect upon it. I know what you’re probably thinking… “My hair? Are you insane? I have school/uni, work and then my relationship or kids and then all the work at home, who’s got time to doll up their hair”, said every Sri Lankan woman ever.

Okay, maybe you don’t have enough time in the morning to spend on your hair and maybe that’s why you don’t really see your hair as a priority, but it should be one (If you want to make some time and give a shot at some easy and fast DIY hairdo’s, whether in the morning or anytime of the day, check out our other article: “A kick start to the DIY hairdo’s”).

Question 02: “If you’re going out for lunch or on a date or a movie or anything special at all, how much thought do you put into your hair?”

Again, take a couple of minutes to think about it, because if you’re going to tell me that combing it and putting on some leave-in serum is “putting in thought”you might as well keep your answer to yourself.

Question 03: “Does ironing your hair or blow-drying it count as styling your hair?”

This, we all know the answer to. Of course it does! Every Sri Lankan woman has an iron/curler and a blow-dryer in their bathroom drawer. They are the hair solutions to every occasion a woman goes to. Dinner date? Iron your hair. Lunch with your best friend? Iron your hair. Hair looks fuzzy? Iron your hair. No wonder all the irons go on 50% off or more during Avurudu and Christmas at most well-known electronic equipment showrooms around the country! It’s literally one of the most bought hairstyling equipment.

Ironing your hair isn’t the only solution! Long silky hair isn’t the “best” type of hair to have, curly or wavy is fine too. All you need is to work on a hairdo that best suits your hair. Your iron or curling machine only destroys your hair further, there are simpler ways to get no-heat curls or silky hair overnight. Surprised? You will be.

What’s even more exciting about long hair is that it’s so versatile and easy to style. You can pretty much do whatever you want with it, create any style for any occasion! However when you don’t have any inspiration or if you’re in a hurry, you fall back to the good old ponytail or the tight bun. Here are two upgrades to the very same everyday ponytail or bun that will give you the inspiration to do more with your hair.

The Twisted Pony

Alright, this is a little bit of an upgrade from your average ponytail. Tis the good old ponytail with a twist. Put some sass in your ponytail and twist your hair on the side of your face before tying it up in the back. This pony is beautiful with a boho look. If it’s an occasion in the night, you can step it up a bit more with a cute accessory like a flower or an embellished headband.

How to do it?

This is one of the most simple hairdos that won’t cost you time. Once, you’re a pro, you’re sure to be doing this every day in the morning before work or uni. It’s literally that easy and simple. Here’s how you create it. Take two strands of your hair from either part of your head. Start twisting the first strand and like in the case of a French braid, keep adding tiny sections of your hair until you reach the end of the strand and secure it with an elastic. Do the same to the section of your hair on the other side of your head. Afterwards, bring both twisted hair strands together with the rest of your hair like you would when tying a normal ponytail and secure it tightly with a hair-tie.

Let’s twist the bun!

This is another sassy and easy bun. You’re probably already thinking, what is with this article and twisting hair. Honestly, long hair is the easiest to twist and style, and the twisted bun is my go-to favourite. The heat wave and all this ‘Karuwale’ these days is driving us insane. Those with long hair are constantly faced with the dire need to run into a salon and cut their hair short. You might want to rethink that decision, this bun is perfect for hot weather, when you want your neck and shoulder to not be covered by your hair, or at the beach, if you want your hair to stay dry when you go for a swim. It’s also very cute and easy to do. Prop it up really high on your head for a younger look or wear it down almost to your neck to look more distinguished.

How to do it?

This is also super easy if you’ve got long hair. All you gotta do is tie your hair up in a high ponytail. After that, start twisting the entire section of your hair. After you’ve tightly twisted your hair strand, secure it neatly and tuck it around your hairband. There you have it, an easy upgrade to your otherwise boring hair bun.

By now you’re probably thinking, why you didn’t think of this before. It’ll literally take you two minutes more than it would normally take you. Get twisting girls!
